California DMV requires anyone who wishes to obtain the States Driver’s license to :

1. Pass the written test.
2. Pass behind the wheel test

Minors ages 15 ½ to 17 ½ firstly need to complete a Driver Education Course and show proof of completion Certificate (DL 400C) when taking the written test. Once passed the written test and obtained their permit, this age group; must wait a minimum of 6 months from the date they passed before Scheduling their behind the wheel test. During these six months, they should complete a 6 hours behind the wheel training with a Licensed California Driving School and receive the completion certificate (DL 400D). Also, please remember the 1st session of training with the school needs to be completed before student starting to drive with anyone else so the instructor gets to sign and validate the permit. They should also complete a 50 hours driving practice (10 hours must include night time driving) with parents/guardians age of 25 or older. Minors ages 17 ½ to 18, do not require to take the Drivers Education course.

** Adults ages 18 or older do not need to complete a Driver Education Course before taking their written test. They can study and prepare for the written test by studying the California Handbook (The newest revision) which is avaiable for free at the DMV locations or the DMV website. But, whether you are an International driver or just new to California, is recommanded for you to take some professional training based on your previous driving experience.
